Microstation Table Exporter is an Add-in for Microsoft Excel that easily and quickly exports tables from Excel to Microstation. Why do I need MSTE? What’s wrong with copy-paste? Microstation does not handle pasted tables very well on its own. Pasted tables come in to Microstation as pictures. Since Microstation handles pasted tables as pictures you cannot customize them as you might need to. Say you have a client that specifies what fonts and line weights your drawings are to be submitted in. Many clients want to have electronic copies of the finished product and will specify what levels to use. Since you cannot customize pasted tables, any tables that would need to be on your drawings would have to be draw manually. This can take a very long time, especially if there are multiple tables on multiple sheets.
Native Microstation Objects. MSTE brings your tables into Microstation as native Microstation objects. The borders are lines that you can select and edit and the text comes in as an actual text objects that you can adjust however you need Features: Translates Excel tables to native Microstation objects. Intuitive controls in Excel Ribbon. Single-click export. Maintains text justification. Maintains border configuration. Direct translation from Excel units to Microstation units. Adjustable import scale. Tables come in to Microstation as cells for easy management. Update notifications. How does it work? Once installed, MSTE adds a tab to your ribbon in Excel 2007+ and a new menu in earlier versions of Excel. To bring a table into Microstation simply select the range and click the “Export Selected” button. Now bring up your Microstation drawing and drop in your new table.
You might want to create a bill of materials in your DGN model. A good way to do that in MicroStation CONNECT is to use Item Types and the built-in reporting tool. If you are using MicroStation V8i then you should consider using tag elements. However, if legacy working practises have been less rigorous, you may have inherited a loosely-assembled collection of text elements in tabular format.

If you installed the Autodesk Navisworks software with exporter plugins, and you install MicroStation software after Autodesk Navisworks is installed, you need to update your exporter plugins installation with the appropriate ARX plugins before you can use them.
A characteristic of a tabular layout of text is that it has no structure. To the human eye, of course, it has rows and columns that make sense. Unfortunately, since one text element has no connection with another text element, you can’t create a meaningful report. Furthermore, depending on the order in which the text elements were created, their order of appearance once exported may vary. That’s also true if you edit parts of the table: elements may be rewritten to the DGN file in a new order. If you attempt to export such a table you end up with a jumble of text. What you want is a neat set of rows, organised into columns. Once that’s done you can hope that an external application, such as Microsoft™ Excel®, can make some sense of your data. The Text Table Exporter VBA project implements spatial algorithms that sort text for us. You press the Export Text Table button, place a fence around the text table, and the VBA code does the hard work. What it does is to sort the text elements within the fence into a set of rows and columns. Each row is sorted by the text element’s X coordinate, and each column is sorted by each element’s Y coordinate. The result is the natural ordering that you might expect.
