Wise Registry Cleaner Free Portable cleans, defragments, and optimizes the Windows Registry. It can create automatic backups and run at scheduled times. Since it’s wise to clean your disks and system before modifying the registry, it’s designed to work closely with Wise Disk Cleaner, another free app from the same developer. However, you can also use the Windows tool or another disk cleaning utility prior to running Wise Registry Cleaner.

At first run, Wise Registry Cleaner wisely suggests backing up the Windows Registry and offers to do it automatically. We agreed and selected both a System Restore Point and a full registry backup, functions we could repeat at will from the taskbar. A left-hand Categories panel offered 16 selections; we opted for the default selections and clicked Scan. Wise Registry Cleaner quickly populated its main view with our registry entries, displaying Root Key, Sub Key, Value, Data, and Categories in draggable columns. A slender filter panel let us select all entries, those safe to fix, and even those not safe to fix from a drop-down list. The program’s default recommendation selected only those files safe to fix. We went with that, clicking Fix, and Wise Registry Cleaner swiftly deleted the selected items. Next we ran the Wise Registry Defragment tool, reviewed its scan results, selected a confirmation and restore point, and clicked Defrag Registry. After rebooting, we immediately checked a few programs and peripherals that would quickly show whether there had been any monkey business in the registry, but everything was A-OK. Running our regular registry tool only turned up a handful of entries Wise Registry Cleaner had skipped, perhaps out of caution, which it’s hard to overemphasize when modifying the registry.

As the name suggests, Wise Registry Cleaner Free Portable is portable freeware that can run without installation from portable storage devices, making it a versatile addition to your PC toolkit. The documentation’s slightly garbled translations offered occasional amusement, doubtless unintentionally. However, the online help and user’s manual were clear enough, and nothing about the program’s operation is confusing. We can’t see paying for a registry cleanup tool when Wise Registry Cleaner does such a fine job for free.
